Dolomites Alta Via Treks

Hiking Alta Via N.4 of the Dolomites – For Experts Only

Six days of exhilarating hiking and via ferrata climbing on the Alta Via 4 high route through some of the most scenic mountains of the Dolomites. This trip is recommended to experienced hikers only, due to exposed ledges and challenging Via Ferrata sections.

Trip Overview

NOTE
The Alta Via 4 presents a great number of challenging and exposed sections throughout the trail, as well as a challenging Via Ferrata on day 5. It is only recommended to experienced mountaineers with strong abilities to progress at high altitudes, on severely exposed and challenging trails. Previous experience on difficult Via Ferrata is essential.

The Alta Via 4 is a fantastic high altitude trail, traversing the Italian Alps from north to south. Alta Via or High Route is the name given to multi-day, hut-to-hut alpine tours. And in the Dolomite Mountains, the Alta Via are some of the most breathtaking, challenging, multi-day trails available in this mountainous wonderland!

On this combined hiking and via ferrata climbing trip, you’ll travel across the Tre Scarpèri, Croda dei Barànci, Cima Grande di Lavaredo, Cristallo, Sorapìss, and Antelao mountains. You’ll traverse this section of the Dolomites from top to bottom, north to south, maintaining medium-high altitude and exploring spectacular angles of these different mountainous groups of the range. And, you can expect to see vistas of up to 80 percent of all the Dolomites!

Truly a hiker's paradise, thousands of trails wind their way between the fantastic pinnacles of the jagged Dolomites, which magically turn from pale gray to gold and pink at dusk. And via ferrata, literally translated as the iron way or iron path, run throughout the Dolomites, incorporate a system of iron ladders to assist hikers on steep mountainous terrain. These trails, originally built and used by soldiers during WWI, are an exhilarating way to access spectacular mountain terrain! And the combination of hiking, via ferrata, and cozy mountain huts, are only surpassed by your discovery of incredible vistas that lie around every corner!

Want to learn more about our Mountain Inns & Rifugios?
Rifugios – or mountain huts in English – are the classic accommodation for hikers, climbers, mountaineers, and ski mountaineers in the Alps. Set in spectacular locations high in the Dolomites, rifugios are accessible only on foot (with a few exceptions that are reachable by car). These marvelous establishments are open primarily in the summer, with a select few in winter, and offer meals and sleeping facilities.

The Dolomite rifugios are considered the best in the Alps. While some are dormitory style with bunk beds, many meet the standard of a simple guest house with private rooms and en-suite bathrooms, and each has its own unique character and charm. Bedding and linens are provided, hot showers are available, and meals are served in common dining areas – like a small mountain inn set high in the mountains with the most incredible vistas in the Dolomites. Whether you’re hiking in summer or skiing in winter, an overnight rifugio stay is not to miss on a Dolomite holiday.
