Discover the Val Badia – Hiking Peaks & Valleys

Join us on a hiking lovers’ dream! Discover the peaks and valleys surrounding the Val Badia in the northern part of the Dolomites – home to some of this UNESCO World Heritage Sites’ most famous peaks. This is a must-visit for hikers wanting to immerse themselves in the authentic Dolomites!

Trip Overview

The Val Badia is a hiking lover's dream. This valley in the northern part of the Dolomites is home to some of the Dolomites most famous peaks – Santa Croce, Sass de Putia, and the Sella Massif to name a few. It is a must-visit for hikers wanting to immerse themselves in the Dolomites and explore a region that is exceptionally authentic – in the heart of the Dolomites, yet removed from the heart of tourism.

You’ll begin by hiking through the beautiful flower-filled Armentara meadows, as you ascend to the awe-inspiring Santa Croce Sanctuary, set beneath the towering Santa Croce / Sas dla Crusc (2,907m / 9,537’). Next comes your first summit opportunity, the Piz de Pares (2,394m / 7,854'), with its sweeping views across the Val Badia. Circumnavigate the majestic Sass de Putia / Peitlerkofel, a mountain standing in isolation, with two distinct peaks. You’ll even have the option to summit the higher of the two peaks, standing at 2,875 meters (9,432'). Finally, hike into the Alpe di Sennes, in the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Natural Park, and experience the more Italian part of the Dolomites!

In addition to its fantastic hiking trails and sweeping vistas, Val Badia is also known for its rich cultural heritage. This 35-kilometer-long valley (22-miles) is a bastion of the Ladin culture, an ancient lineage descended from the Romans, with a distinct language officially recognized by Italy. You’ll see the influences not only in the three-language signage across the valley, but reflected in its architecture, traditions, and cuisine. While you are here, take the opportunity to visit the local museums, churches, and historic sites to learn more about the area's fascinating history.

This unique itinerary will guide you through the northern reaches of the Val Badia, higher on the map but slightly lower in altitude than the more frequented Alta Badia. You’ll explore the centuries-old Ladin villages of La Val and San Vigilio di Marebbe, and enjoy moderate hiking on incredible trails over high passes, ascending peaks that offer sweeping vistas, and descending into magnificent valleys. Discover the Val Badia with us, hiking each day, enjoy authentic Ladin

Want to learn more about our Mountain Inns & Rifugi?

Rifugi – or mountain huts in English – are the classic accommodation for hikers, climbers, mountaineers, and ski mountaineers in the Alps. Set in spectacular locations high in the Dolomites, rifugi are accessible only on foot (with a few exceptions that are reachable by car). These marvelous establishments are open primarily in the summer, with a select few in winter, and offer meals and sleeping facilities.
The Dolomite rifugi are considered the best in the Alps. While some are dormitory style with bunk beds, many meet the standard of a simple guest house with private rooms and en-suite bathrooms, and each has its own unique character and charm. Bedding and linens are provided, hot showers are available, and meals are served in common dining areas – like a small mountain inn set high in the mountains with the most incredible vistas in the Dolomites. Whether you’re hiking in summer or skiing in winter, an overnight rifugio stay is not to miss on a Dolomite holiday.
