Hiking through Nature and History in the Sesto Dolomites

Sesto is 1,310m / 4,298' above sea level at the South Tyrolean Puster Valley exit. It is a climbing paradise near the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, a spacious climbing hall; it has terrific ski and cross-country areas available directly from the town center, numerous hiking, trail running, and mountain-bike routes, idyllic lakes, and rivers, and cultural sites, all offering fantastic adventures and recreation.

This morning, take a private transfer to Cimabanche, the trailhead where your trek begins. Hike along a spectacular route beneath the northern face of Croda Rossa Mountain and through Prato Piazza, a stunning high-alpine pasture valley.
This area offers one of the best vantage points for viewing Croda Rossa, named for its blood-red rock, coloured by iron oxide. Reach a rifugio, the perfect spot for a relaxing lunch. From here, take in breathtaking views of the Croda Rossa Massif (Red Wall in English, Rote Wand in German), the Cristallo group, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, and the Fanes–Sennes–Braies Nature Park.
After lunch, descend along a gravel road before taking a private transfer back to Sesto.

Today, you’ll hike the first stage of the Alta Via Carnica, also known as "the Peace Trail". This long-distance hike takes you through history, following the former front line of World War I.
The entire route spans approximately 180km (111.8 miles), typically divided into 9-11 daily stages. When shortened, it connects San Candido in Trentino Alto Adige with Coccau di Sotto, the last small village in Friuli Venezia-Giulia before the Austrian border. The complete trail continues to Thörl-Maglern, a small village in the former Italian municipality of Arnoldstein in Austria.

Today, you’ll explore one of the oldest parts of the Alps, hiking around the ancient Quaternà volcano. This blackish volcanic massif is a true geological rarity—what remains of an old volcanic conduit, a channel that once carried lava from a magmatic reservoir. Active for two to three million years, it dates back approximately 290 million years.
However, Quaternà is not only known for its geological significance. Sadly, it also bears the scars of World War I. As you hike, you'll come across remnants of those harrowing days, a solemn reminder of the mountain’s turbulent past.

Today, enjoy a short and pleasant hike back to Sesto, passing through pastures and forests of larch and fir. Along the way, you’ll discover the gem of Val Fiscalina, famous for its colourful flower carpets, dense forests, charming mountain pastures, and stunning UNESCO World Heritage rock faces.
