Trip Overview

Are you fascinated by historic trails, breathtaking landscapes, and ancient geology? If yes, then join us on this unforgettable hiking adventure in the Sesto Dolomites! This multi-day trek will take you through Croda Rossa, Alta Via Carnica, Quaternà Ancient Volcano, and the scenic Val Fiscalina, immersing you in the wild and beautiful UNESCO Dolomites.
You'll start in the charming alpine village of Sesto/Sexten, located at 1,310m (4,298') in South Tyrol's Puster Valley. The gateway to adventure, this mountain paradise offers world-class hiking, climbing, and outdoor recreation, set against the stunning backdrop of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo.
You'll begin your first trek in Cimabanche, where your trail winds through Val dei Chenópe, leading you beneath the towering Croda Rossa (Red Wall), named for its striking red rock rich in iron oxide. This picturesque route brings you through the high alpine pastures of Prato Piazza, offering panoramic views of the Cristallo Group, Tre Cime di Lavaredo, and Fanes-Sennes-Braies Natural Park.
Take a gondola up Mount Elmo, where you join the Alta Via Carnica, a historic long-distance route along the World War I front line. You'll stop by the pretty Obstanser Alpine Lake, where you can rent a pedal boat or soak in the stunning views of the Großglockner, Austria's highest peak, and settle down for a wonderfully peaceful night at the traditional rifugio here.
Next up on the agenda, you'll step back in time as you hike over one of the oldest volcanic formations in the Alps. The blackish bulwark of Mount Quaternà is the remains of a volcano active 290 million years ago! You'll then ascend Sella dei Frugnoni (2,527m / 8,291'), the highest point of your trek, admire the vibrant rhododendron meadows and take in the numerous remnants of World War I battle sites.
On your final hike, discover the gem of Val Fiscalina, renowned for its vibrant flower carpets, lush forests, charming mountain pastures, and breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage rock faces.
Imagine an ideal mix of adventure, history, and natural beauty, where every day presents a new challenge and a deeper connection with the spectacular Dolomites.

Accommodation

Great hotels with Dolomite Mountains. Whether intimate lodge, family run B&B, or luxury spa resort, our hotels are unique, eminently local, and hard to leave.

Want to learn more about our Hotels and B&Bs?
The Dolomites has a multi-faceted culture and history that is reflected in each village we visit, and we make sure to provide you with the most authentic experience of the region possible through the hotels and B&Bs we offer. Hotels and chalets are available in the larger villages, while agriturismos (working farms with accommodations similar to B&Bs) are more common in rural areas. And we always make sure you have access to inspired regional cuisine and the best panoramas you can get in the Dolomites!

Want to learn more about our Mountain Inns & Rifugios?
Rifugios – or mountain huts in English – are the classic accommodation for hikers, climbers, mountaineers, and ski mountaineers in the Alps. Set in spectacular locations high in the Dolomites, rifugios are accessible only on foot (with a few exceptions that are reachable by car). These marvelous establishments are open primarily in the summer, with a select few in winter, and offer meals and sleeping facilities.

The Dolomite rifugios are considered the best in the Alps. While some are dormitory style with bunk beds, others meet the standard of a simple guest house with private rooms and en-suite bathrooms, and each has its own unique character and charm. Hot showers are available, and meals are served in common dining areas – like a small mountain inn set high in the mountains with the most incredible vistas in the Dolomites. Whether you’re hiking in summer or skiing in winter, an overnight rifugio stay is not to miss on a Dolomite holiday.
