Hiking in Val di Fassa Getaway

Discover the magic of Val di Fassa on an exciting hiking getaway through the stunning Dolomites, surrounded by the iconic peaks Roda di Vael, Catinaccio, Sassolungo, and the majestic Marmolada. Perfect for nature lovers and adventurers, this trip offers unforgettable views, summit opportunities, and legendary tales at every turn.

Trip Overview

The captivating region of Val di Fassa is the setting for this hiking adventure getaway. The Fassa Valley is not only rich in history, legends, and generous hospitality. It is surrounded by some of the most renowned peaks in the Dolomites: the Roda di Vae / Rotwan, Catinaccio / Rosengarten, Sassolungo / Langkofel, the Sella Group, and Marmolada – revered as the "Queen of the Dolomites."

Your journey begins in Val Contrin, a valley set on the western base of the Marmolada, and takes you toward Passo San Pellegrino. This area sits between the Pale di San Martino and the Fassa Dolomites, with stunning views of Creste di Costabella and Cima Uomo all the way to Marmolada in the north, with more surrounding vistas of Sorapiss, Pelmo, Civetta, Col Margherita, and of course, the Pale di San Martino and Lagorai chain.

As you approach Passo Luisa, surrounded by trenches and remains of military posts that date back to WWI, the landscape opens up to reveal expansive views of the Dolomites’ mountains and valleys. You will summit one or two peaks today (depending on your interests and energy level!), and enjoy a descent on one of the most fun scree slopes in all of the Dolomites.

Your final hike, which takes you to Sass da Mezzodì, is an adventure through diverse terrains, starting with lush alpine meadows, gradually transitioning into rocky paths that challenge and excite. The Sas da Mezzodì is a hidden gem in the heart of Val di Fassa – the tranquility of this less-frequented spot allows for a peaceful and introspective experience, making it a perfect place for contemplation and connection with nature.

Throughout your journey, you'll have the opportunity to savor the delicious traditional cuisine of the Fassa Valley, and hear legendary stories over lingering sips of local wine in cozy, authentic rifugios and hand-selected hotels.

Want to learn more about our Mountain Inns & Rifugi?
Rifugi – or mountain huts in English – are the classic accommodation for hikers, climbers, mountaineers, and ski mountaineers in the Alps. Set in spectacular locations high in the Dolomites, rifugi are accessible only on foot (with a few exceptions that are reachable by car). These marvelous establishments are open primarily in the summer, with a select few in winter, and offer meals and sleeping facilities.

The Dolomite rifugi are considered the best in the Alps. While some are dormitory style with bunk beds, many meet the standard of a simple guest house with private rooms and en-suite bathrooms, and each has its own unique character and charm. Bedding and linens are provided, hot showers are available, and meals are served in common dining areas – like a small mountain inn set high in the mountains with the most incredible vistas in the Dolomites. Whether you’re hiking in summer or skiing in winter, an overnight rifugio stay is not to miss on a Dolomite holiday.

To learn even more about rifugi in the Dolomites, check out our Rifugios in the Dolomites article, and learn about one of the best ways to experience these incredible mountains!
