The Dolomites Nominated for Alpine Ski World Cup 2015

This world renowned and historic resort has a long and distinguished track record when it comes to staging international sports event. Cortina hosted major winter sports events even before the 1956 Winter Olympics. The first ski race took place in Cortina as early as 1902, and in 1941 the town hosted its first World Ski Championships. 1903 saw the inception of the Sci Club Cortina, which in 1973 was awarded "Stella d'Oro", or the gold star, by the Italian Olympic Committee, for its services and sporting achievements. At present, after the great success of the Mixed Curling Championship 2009, Cortina will host the World Curling Championship for Men in April next year.
The Committee has structured the organization chart, involving specialist agencies and drawing on world-class expertise and organizational skills when presenting its plans outlining the organization, public policy and logistics for its candidacy. All aspects of the organization are put under the microscope, from the logistics of transportation and accommodation, to communication and technology, without neglecting the marketing side and associated promotional events.
Should Cortina be successful in its bid to host the World Cup, its first project would be to undertake a reorganization of its athletic facilities. The main condition is undoubtedly the adaptation of the slopes and lifts. Targeted technical interventions are planned to ensure compliance with all FIS requirements, while fully respecting the landscape and the environment.
Numerous events are planned, including an impressive setting for the solemn moments, such as the opening and closing ceremonies and the award ceremonies, which will be held at the newly renovated historic Olympic ice skating stadium.
One cannot overlook the great diversity of what the Queen of the Dolomites has to offer, from sport and tradition to sophistication and glitz, and its newly acquired status as a UNESCO World Heritage site of the Dolomites.
The three candidates, Cortina d'Ampezzo (ITA), St. Moritz (SUI) and Vail / Beaver Creek (USA), will meet with the FIS Inspection Group in Zurich to present the contents of the dossier and face the scrutiny of the International Ski Federation.  The process of nomination will continue on October  and November with the visit to the site of the conference scheduled in May 2010.
