Cross Country Skiing
While the Dolomite Mountains may be best known for downhill skiing, this area is also a mecca for cross-country skiing. The Dolomites 231 tracks across 12 resorts comprise over 1,280 kilometers (795 miles) of trails. You can choose to do laps within the resorts, or ski from point to point, resort center to resort center, along an interconnected web of trails. And whether you prefer a relaxing day touring the flats, or to test your limits on FIS-certified competition tracks, you will definitely find the right trails to meet your needs here, all the while accompanied by the picturesque backdrop of the Dolomites.
In the Dolomites, ski pistes, or tracks, are classified by a color-coded system – blue (easy, and often shorter tracks), red (intermediate, longer tracks), and black (expert tracks, also used for racing). Each track or trail also includes a distance, to help you choose how long (or far) you want to ski. Easier cross-country skiing trips will stay on shorter, easier tracks. As trips increase in activity level, you will encounter more difficult pistes, and may ski from valley to valley, resort to resort. All tracks are groomed for both classic (stride) and skate (free) skiing.
